The Story: Oil tanker sinks off the coast of southern Spain
The Facts: Just a day after Greenpeace boarded an oil vessel near Gibraltar, the Spabunker 4 sank in Spanish waters on the other side of Algeciras bay. Two members of the crew have been rescued, but the captain is still missing. The slick, which is reportedly not from the cargo but from the engines of the ship, is being contained by authorities from Spain and Gibraltar who say that it is not dangerous. In November, the tanker Prestige sank off the coast of northwestern Spain, spilling 77,000 tonnes of toxic fuel oil along the coast, ruining the beautiful beach of Galicia.
The Spin: It's a shame that this happened, and there is obviously a serious problem with Spanish oil tankers, but the story made me wonder. There is no mention of a cause, as yet, for the accident (if accident it is). Is the mention of Greenpeace purely coincidental? Are these ships just naturally prone to sinking? Obviously I need to do more research. :&)
