Well, a lot has been written on the subject of the Veggie Tales debate in the comments section of one of Mark Shea's posts. My confrere, Pete Vere, has set about defending his preference for "The Water Buffalo Song" by using Canon Law, obviously his area of expertise. I, however, will use a different approach--the dictionary. The definition of "silly", as it applies in this discussion, is defintion 3c: "TRIFLING, FRIVOLOUS". If we are going to debate which is the best Silly Song, it would necessarily have to be the silliest, i.e., the most trifling and frivolous. Now, let us look at the lyrics to "The Water Buffalo Song"...

Everybody's got a water buffalo
Yours is fast but mine is slow
Oh where'd we get them? I don't know
But everybody's got a water buffalo-ooooooooo!

I took my buffalo to the store
Got his head stuck in the door
Spilled some lima beans on the floor
Oh everybody's got a ..

You have to admit, this is pretty trifling and frivolous!

Tim Drake has handily posted the votes of other bloggers, and tied for the lead with Water Buffalo is "His Cheeseburger", despite the fact that, as Tim Mason pointed out, it is not even a Silly Song but a Love Song. In any case, it is easy to tell that "His Cheeseburger" is not the most trifling and frivolous song because, frankly, it makes a small amount of sense; the song is actually about something--cheeseburger. Tim Mason has voted for "Dance of the Cucumber". His first two arguments are "1) Anti-Disney Innuendo. Inferences to Snow White and Disney theme parks that are far more funny than the many anti-Disney assaults in Shreck. See also, Wardrobe. 2) Educational Points. TDotC is the only Silly Song that is featured in a bi-lingual format." Although he obviously does not realize it, these points work against Tim's argument, not for it. If the song has some kind of meaning and is in some way educational, it simply cannot be the most trifling and frivolous of the Silly Songs. Mark Shea, who started the whole thing, supports "The Song of Cebu", but the opening lines of this song immediately show that it is not the silliest: "This is a song about a boy...a song about a little boy and his cebus..." Here again, the song is ABOUT something; it has a purpose! This disqualifies it from being the most trifling and frivolous. Other votes went to "The Christmas Cookie Song" (by which I assume is meant "Oh Santa") and "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" but I won't tax your patience by dissecting those. Have a nice day!
